Xylazine’s Rising Presence in Drug Supply Poses New Threat to Correctional Facilities

Eclipse Screening Technologies’ VeroVision® Mail Screener+ Helps Detect the Growing Danger

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PITTSBURGH (February 26, 2025) – Xylazine, a powerful veterinary sedative increasingly found in the illicit drug supply, is presenting new challenges for correctional facilities nationwide, including those in the Philadelphia area. Eclipse Screening Technologies’ newly launched VeroVision® Mail Screener+ can combat this growing crisis by equipping prisons and jails with the ability to detect xylazine and other dangerous substances in incoming mail.

Xylazine, often mixed with fentanyl and other opioids, is particularly concerning due to its severe side effects, including profound sedation, respiratory depression, and necrotic skin wounds. Unlike opioids, xylazine is not reversed by naloxone, making overdoses more difficult to treat. The drug’s increasing presence in contraband mail raises serious health and security risks within correctional institutions.

“Our technology provides an essential layer of protection against the growing sophistication of drug smuggling,” said Peter Safran, CEO of Eclipse Screening Technologies. “The rise of xylazine in the illicit drug market poses yet another evolving threat to incarcerated individuals and corrections staff. The VeroVision Mail Screener+ is designed to help facilities stay ahead of these threats by detecting xylazine and other dangerous substances hidden in postal mail.”

With correctional facilities in the Philadelphia region already utilizing the VeroVision® Mail Screener, local systems are better equipped to combat the growing presence of xylazine-laced substances. As drug smuggling tactics become more advanced, institutions are increasingly turning to technology to bolster their mail screening protocols.

Xylazine is one of over 20 drugs and cutting agents in the VeroVision Mail Screener+ detection and presumptive identification library. Eclipse continuously researches and updates its drug catalog to meet the evolving needs of correctional facilities.
